Why Keywords Still Matter
Keywords are the bridge between what people search for and the content you create. Getting them right means your content shows up when potential customers are looking for exactly what you offer.
The good news? You don't need to be an SEO expert or pay for expensive tools to do keyword research effectively.
Step 1: Start With What You Know
Before touching any tool, write down 10-15 topics your customers ask about. These could be:
- Questions they email you about
- Topics that come up in sales calls
- Problems your product or service solves
- Terms your industry uses that customers might search for
This list is your seed — the foundation everything else builds on.
Step 2: Expand With Search Suggestions
Take each seed topic and type it into Google. Pay attention to:
- Autocomplete suggestions: What Google suggests as you type reveals what people actually search for
- People Also Ask: These questions show related topics and subtopics worth covering
- Related searches: Found at the bottom of the results page, these suggest broader topic clusters
Step 3: Assess Difficulty and Opportunity
Not all keywords are worth targeting. For each candidate keyword, consider:
- Search volume: Is anyone actually searching for this? Even low-volume keywords can be valuable if they're highly relevant
- Competition: Are the top results from massive sites, or could a smaller site realistically rank?
- Intent match: Does the searcher want what you're offering? "Best CRM software" has buying intent; "what is CRM" is informational
Step 4: Group Into Clusters
Individual keywords are useful, but clusters are powerful. Group related keywords into topics, then create comprehensive content that covers each cluster:

Step 5: Prioritize and Execute
You can't target everything at once. Prioritize based on:
- Business relevance: Which keywords connect most directly to revenue?
- Quick wins: Which keywords have lower competition where you could rank faster?
- Content gaps: What are competitors covering that you haven't addressed yet?
Start with 3-5 clusters and build from there. Consistency beats volume every time.
